In Lilienfeld lies the largest medieval monastic complex of Austria: with the medieval cloister, the chapter hall, the dormitory for the lay brothers, the cellar and the largest church of Lower Austria. The abbey of Lilienfeld was founded in 1202 by duke Leopold VI of the Babenberg family. The first monks came from the abbey of Heiligenkreuz. Lilienfeld is situated on the classical via sacra (sacred road) - the traditional pilgrimage path between Vienna and Mariazell. |
